TARDETS (ATHARRATZE in Basque - according to ORPUSTAN, the name might possibly be derived from « athe-arr-atze » stony passage... across the Saison [?], the turbulent torrent along which the village lies). Capital city of the "Upper-Soule". Tardets is in fact at the foot of the Pyrenees, less than 25 kms as the crow flues from the Pic d'Orhy (2017m.). Nearly 700 inhabitants (Tardésiens). The square surrounded by arcades, the rather austere, slate-roofed houses of the more eminent citizens, the 19th.-century church, are all evidence of the town' s importance up to the middle of that last century.
