SAISON ou GAVE DE MAULEON (UHAITZ-HANDI in Basque meaning mighty torrent). Less than 60 kms long, it is formed by the confluence of the torrents of Larrau and Sainte-Engrâce, about 8 kms south of Tardets. It flows through many villages and towns of the Soule province (including Tardets and Mauléon). Joins the "Gave d'Oloron" a little to the west of Sauve-terre. C. DESPLAT tells us that, in the 18th century, the royal administration took an interest in the Soule province to « find a remedy for the whimsical behaviour of the Saison river », which had long perturbed the lives of the local inhabitants.
