SAINTE-ENGRACE (The old Basque name was URDAITZ, plateau rock, says Orpustan, before it became SAINTA-GARAZI [a saint from Saragossa] in the 11 th century when the village became a dependency of the great monastery of Leyre, birthplace of the Navarra monarchy) 300 inhabitants (Sainte-Engraciens). Because of it strategic position at the head of mountain passes, it was, like Larrau, one of the "royal boroughs" of Soule. 12th-century church (built on the remains of an 11th-cent. abbey). Nearby assets include the Kakoueta Gorges, the abyss of La-Pierre-St-Martin, and the GR10 hiking trail.
