SAINT-JEAN-DE-PIED-DE-PORT
(DONIBANE GARAZI, in Basque, literally Saint-Jean Engrâce).
ORPUSTAN very clearly explains how the name of the patron saint of
the present town of Saint-Jean-le-Vieux
was transferred to the new town established in the late l2th and early
l3th centuries by the Kings of Navarre (Pamplona), who made it their
(administrative and military) capital in "Lower Navarre". It is still
the capital city of the "Basse-Navarre" province today.
A little over 1,400 inhabitants (Saint-Jeannais). The banks of the
River Nive, superb views, and the remains of its past are its claims
to fame.
