SAINT-JEAN-LE VIEUX (DONAZAHARRE in B.) 900 inhabitants (Vétijeannois) ORPUSTAN recalls that this was the name of his own parish St-Jean d'Urrutia (the l2th-century latin St-Jean-de-Cize), whose Romanesque church is now in ruins, and that there were 3 other churches, including the present-day St-Pierre with its Romanesque portal. Other remains (including Roman elements, a 13th-century hospital on the Compostella route, the 12th-cent. St-Blaise chapel), and buildings that are still presentable bear witness to the glorious past of this town that was partly destroyed by Richard the Lionheart in 1177.
