| MAULEON FORTRESS - Was this fortress built by Alphonse "the
Pugnacious", king of Pamplona and Aragon (from 1104 to 1134), at a
time when Gassion, 4th viscount of Soule
(from 1120 to 1130) strengthened his ties with Navarre
? Maybe, but there was certainly an earlier construction on the same
spot belonging to the Viscounts of Soule (the first of whom was Guillaume-Fort,
viscount 1023-1040). And it is equally likely that the Romans had
built a stronghold (oppidum) on this high point of Mauléon
and the Saison river
valley... on top of a former « gaztelu », camp retranché
protohistorique. |
