BAYONNE : BAIONA in Basque ; this could come from « Ibai » river and « on », good ; the town has indeed benefitted from its exceptional situation (sea + confluence of the Adour and Nive rivers). Capital city of the French Basque Country and of
« Labourd », one of the 7 provinces of the BC. Nearly 42,000 inhabitants (the urban district of Bayonne-Anglet-Biarritz, alias the BAB, has 112,000). After several centuries under English rule, the city became French again in 1451. There are many traces of its very rich history. An administrative centre, but also a very lively town as regards industry and tourism.
