Antoine d'ABBADIE Castle - Antoine d'Abbadie d'Arrast (1810-1897) was a brilliant explorer, and his younger brother Arnaud strove in vain to make Ethiopia a French protectorate. The castle was built between 1860 and 1870 by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, the talented architect who restored many a renowned medieval monument, such as Notre-Dame in Paris or the City of Carcassonne. He made of this castle a little neo-Gothic masterpiece, richly decorated and marked by the passion of its owner for the Orient. Just outside Hendaye, it offers an exceptional point of view.
