ASCAIN
(AZKAINE in Basque, which J-B. Orpustan says is derived from the transformation
of « aitz-gain » rocky height). About 2,700 inhabitants
(Azkaindar). An attractive village (immortalized by novellist Pierre
LOTI in Ramuntcho, 1897) with a pretty square closed on one
side by a "fronton" (wall of the pelota court) ; church
with a massive square l6th and l7th-century belfry ; houses typical
of the Labourd province ; ancient communal wash-house... At the foot
of the Rhune mountain, which can be reached by the famous little cog-railway.
